The World Health Organization (WHO) declared COVID-19 a worldwide pandemic on Mawhen more than 118,000 people were affected by severe acute respiratory syndrome-related coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) throughout the world. The outbreak of COVID-19 started in Wuhan, China, in December 2019 and quickly spread beyond the borders of the People’s Republic of China. Further studies are needed to understand if such reductions during the COVID-19 pandemic will result in a rebound of patients left untreated or in unwanted consequences for population health. Currently, it is not known if mortality of people who did not seek care increased during the pandemic. Conclusionsĭuring the COVID-19 outbreak the volume of urgent surgeries and patients accessing our ED dropped. Conversely, the number of deaths increased by 196%.
